oh god, jeans shopping. kill me now.

Why is it that every fall, when it comes time for me to buy a new type of jeans I feel the sudden, random urge to kill myself in some brutal fashion( i.e. bullet to head, electrocution, drowning etc.). I know it's hardly time to be worrying about my fall shopping extravaganza but I seem to be doing it anyway, so here goes.
Shopping for that new pair of perfectly form fitting, stylish, not bank breakingly expensive and god like jeans can be compared to a lot of things. Like a huge minefield with more mines that square space. One false step can leave you battered and defeated, with a severe urge to never ever shop for anything denim related ever again. While shopping for that special pair there is a few things one must never ever EVER forget:
  • Sizes are LIARS!!! You will never be the same size from one store to the next, so don't have a spasm if you suddenly don't fit into a 4 anymore. It's not you, it's the jeans.

  • Avoid any sort of ugly embroidering or embellishment of any kind when it comes to shopping for denim. No, that huge purple flower on you hip is not cool.

  • Don't, repeat don't go shopping during that 'special time of the month'. I swear to god it is a recipe for disaster. You will end up crying, and you will end up having a heart to heart with the over-made up girl who works the change rooms.

  • Trust your instincts, your intuition isn't always just there to fuck with you, sometimes it's actually right. If the jeans look really good but you still have reservations, don't buy them. You'll just end up returning them the next day

  • Try to avoid going shopping for jeans with friends, it's such a delicate task already that any unwanted distractions will not exactly help. If you do just have to bring that one friend, make just that she is a super shopper who will not point to everything in the store and say "Oooo that's cute, you should try that on." You must remained focused.

  • Don't go empty-handed, get one of your favourite over caffeinated, fattening coffee drinks before you take the plunge. If necessary, get one afterwards too, to sooth your shattered nerves.

So now that I've got that rant over with, what kind of jeans are we shopping for this season? As I see it, we've got a grand total of 3 options:

There are the skinnies that were everywhere a while back( and sorta still are), for some reason I think we shouldn't just pass over skinnies...

The wide leg jeans( as featured in Teen Vogue) that were the fashion industries andidote to the skinnies craze, I never really got into them but they could make a suprise comeback...

Or we could simply revert to the plain old not too thin, not too wide leg jeans that seem to always be lingering in the background...

So, what do you girls( and boys) think?

love, Alison

heeeey there (=

I Think you should try the wide-leg jeans as you haven't done it before (= I used to own a pair of those and they're great. The second option, in my opinion, are the skinnies, as you said they won't get out of fashion like in years =P. I wouldn't buy the last ones you mentioned just because girls wear them sooo much here that is getting kind of boring to watch them over and over.

I also wanted to remind you i've already added you to my links ;), don't forget to add my URL on yours (=

What a fab post. Perfectly written and I agree with every point. So true. I am rockin' skinny jeans all the way. Still waiting for my Nudie Super Slim Kims to arrive from Australia (they stopped selling them in London, grrr)!!

hahah. i love the tips
and i would get a pair of widelegs and lots of skinnies in new colours...not just the average dark wash.

That size thing is very tru. Sorry I haven't been checking out ur blog so much I've been trying and trying but my laptop doesn't like your site very much. It keeps sending me 2 a dell page ugh! But I love ur blog 2!So back 2 sizes I can be a 7 in jeans or a five or four in the next. And it drives me crazy considering that 7 sounds big to me and for me. When in reality I am a normal girl (weight-wise).I truly love the wide leg jeans on that girl! But I'm pretty sure you'd have 2 have a certain figure for those kinda pants!
well see ya!

i hate jean shopping!!!! judging how i have a 36' inseam and im 5'10", i don't even fit the LONG sizes!

love your blog, link exchange?

I absolutely DREAD jean shopping, or really any shopping at department, or chain stores.

It' very hard to find a great pair of jeans.

I still like the skinnies, and I kind of like the wide leg jeans, but the regular jeans not so much.

I love thrifting just as much as you, can live with out it! and it's so much more exciting finding something at a thrift store than a reg. store.

This perfectly captures the trauma of jeans shopping. I have to say while I lunge for wide legs when I see them, they're really hard on me for fit. The last few pairs of pants I've picked up have definitely been in the 3rd, slightly bootcut, old school style.

That was hilarious and so so true. jean shopping is so stressful!
I love my skinys but I really want wide leg jeans. Those ones in Teen vogue are a little too wide but the ones that Kate Moss wear look really cool. Best of luck with it!

I need a new pair of jeans and i am dreading going shopping for them! And i hate it until after trying on 10000000 pairs of jeans that one perfect pair comes and then it all feels worth it, but why must we go through all the crappy pairs first?? why cant that amazing one be the first one we try on? anyway great post as usual!

I totally agree with you, shopping for that perfect pair of jeans is AWFUL! I would say to look for some Levi's skinny jeans (they have them in a whole bunch of really cute washes), or look for some jeans at Lucky. Yeah, they break the bank, but they're really good quality denim. If you you can't find anything that fits you except for the third option, I suggest that you buy them and get them tailored to look like skinny jeans. The Kings of Leon do it, so why shouldn't you? Anyway, I hope that helped. Good luck finding jeans!

If you hate jeans shopping like me, make sure you get more than one pair of any style you love....it will save on tears later on! And my faves are Acne, for what it's worth.

I hate shopping for pants. I'm kind of short and skinny, except my butt is not proportionate to the rest of my body, so finding pants, especially tighter ones, is kind of hard. That's why I love wide leg jeans (although not quite as wide leg as the Teen Vogue example). They're more sophisticated anyways, and they only have to fit you on the hips.

ah, hilarious and great post. I am into the very very slim boot cut right now. Just a teensy bit past straight, almost unnoticeable but not cutting off ankle circulation.

grr jean shopping.... i can never find a pair of perfect jeans... you're tips are so right... idk how many pairs i bought on a whim and never ever wore again.. sheesh.

love the mini-guide, very great! on my denim list is soft-looking (but not too tight) gray skinnies, and some light roomy denim. Unlike other people, as a teen I bought lots of dark wash denim and I think it should be time to get at least one pair of light ones ;)

Btw, thanks for your comment on the "leather issue" post. I had no idea you wore strictly cruelty-free too (no leather, etc)...I couldn't tell from your website!

I really hope skinnies don't die! I have so many! But I have invested in a really nive pair of high waisted wide legged jeans. They're amazing

I would go for the wide leg jeans for something refreshingly new (for school, anyway) and teh skinnies I guess are the new classics, so it0s always good to own a pair of those.

haha, funny post, loved it! and also so true. jeans shopping is somewhat painful and annoying, but i never become to fixated on it, i'm less picky, which is stupid of me i guess b/c i love jeans so much so i should put effort into finding a flawless pair, but w/e, i waste my worrying on other mundane disasters haha.

i still love skinnies, so i'm wearing those even if they're out haha, and i would be swimming in a sea of denim if i went wideleg, so no thanks, too short for that one

I have a fashion problem and I hope you can help! I live in Texas, where its summer like weather all year around, but my favorite fashion is that of fall with tights and jackets and such. Do you have any ideas how I could do a more climate friendly version of the latest fall looks? Thanks!

i could be wrong, but i believe i'm the only male responding... i just tried some skinny jeans on today where i work... and honestly... i liked them!! i had to go up a size, but i did not mind. now that i have my regular size jeans (between a skinny and wide aka staight jeans) i don't feel right in them! i really want that Dior look!

HaHa said...

I love jean shopping, but I do agree that its my least favorite shopping species. More often than not im going to go with the skinnies. I dont know, wide leg never really caught on with me. I dont want my shoes to be swallowed in denim!

It's so hard to find a perfect fit of jeans, I totally agree. Gotta love the classic bootcut, and I'm still holding on to my skinnies. Not sure about the super-wide leg look, however. With those ones, I would feel totally engulfed!
